THE GREAT ROUTE 66 ADVENTURE CONTINUES

THE GREAT ROUTE 66 ADVENTURE CONTINUES

The canyons west of Kingman along Route 66, the original and last alignment, are always awe inspiring in their stunning beauty. However, it is at sunrise when these canyons become truly enchanting.
This first photo is really unique in that it is almost identical to one taken near this location in 1919. The railroad bridge was in this photo as was the highway between the two tracks. In that photo the road between the tracks, the original alignment of Route 66, was a graded gravel track signed as The national Old Trails Highway. These canyons are so stunning that even a small sewage treatment facility at the mid point does little to detract from the breath taking landscapes. Add a couple of trains and catch a vintage car with the sun glinting on the chrome and you have the perfect photo to capture the very spirit of this legendary highway.

Now, a quick update on progress in the efforts to transform Kingman into a crown jewel on old Route 66. Yesterday it looked as though the mural program was set back at least six months. However, meetings between Chris Durkin, with the Kingman Route 66 Association of Kingman, and Robert Bravo, with Grand Canyon West Resort, yesterday afternoon have it back on the fast track.
So, if all goes as planned we should have the first show piece completed before Christmas. The creation of a neon corridor remains in limbo.
One more item of note. The Route 66 Cruizers in conjunction with the Kingman Downtown Merchants, the Kingman Route 66 Association, and the Boys & Girls Club, with major assistance from Walmart, will be transforming the Kingman historic district into a fun filled Halloween extravaganza on Saturday evening, October 31. Music, candy for the kids distributed from the trunks of cars at the car show, a haunted house, and more fun is the game plan.

Dash plaques will be given to the first 125 vehicle entries. The entry for participating vehicles will be at Spring and Fourth Street.
Chillin’ on Beale Street returnsd in November. Even though this is Arizona, chances are there will be some chillin’ as well as some good times.
