LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
During the Great Depression some of the finest and most expensive automobiles rolled from factories – in small numbers. The theaters were often packed as every studio produced a plethora of films and what better way to while away the day if you didn’t have a job?
Distractions of any kind were a highly sought after commodity during those dark days. Why should this depression be any different?
Let the good times roll, escape the doom and gloom for at least an evening or two and enjoy the music, food, and cars under a desert sky. First there is the mega event of the season, a summer block party scheduled for this Saturday evening at Martin Swanty Chrysler on Route 66 in Kingman, Arizona.
A pool company is setting up a large swimming pool for the younger set as I type these words and a life guard will be on duty for the evening of the event. In addition to the music, colorful cars, and the loud cars, yours truly will be in attendance to sign copies of my latest book, Ghost Towns of the Southwesthttp://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=1968adventurer&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=0760332215&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr, as part of the Jeep promotion that is also a part of the event.
Next on the slate of events is the August edition of Chillin on Beale Street scheduled for Saturday, August 21. The event is always open to anything with wheels from bicycles and motorcycles to antiques, street rods, and even motor homes.
However, each month there is a theme and owners whose vehicles fit that theme wins a prize. Well, at least the first two hundred entries will win a prize.
Last month it was a salute to the automotive orphan. In that category there was a beautiful 1948 Indian, several representatives from the Hudson company including a nice 1947 pick up truck, and a stunning 1949 De Soto sedan.
Of course there were the usual hot rods, muscle cars, and a few antiques including a couple of Model A and Model T Fords. There were also the oddities such as a 1947 Ford bus and a solar powered golf cart.
As the theme for this month is “Topless Fun on Route 66” I am eagerly anticipating next week to see what turns out for this salute to the convertible. What did you think I was anticipating?
Apparently the Route 66 Association of Kingman, the sponsoring organization, is working out a few details but at this time the bill of fare includes the car show, no charge for entry, vendors, belly dancers, a poker walk in the historic district, a Route 66 themed scavenger hunt, and a cruise through the historic district to Mr. D’z and the Powerhouse Visitor Center/Route 66 Museum that will be open that evening.
