Even with a constricted schedule it is difficult to consider an adventure on Route 66 a business trip. But as we were on the road to promote Ghost Towns of Route 66, Ghost Towns of the Southwest, and Backroads of Route 66, and to gather images as well as material for the forthcoming Route 66 encyclopedia, that is exactly what this was.
So, on the last day of our grand adventure we were on the streets of Santa Rosa, New Mexico taking pictures as soon as the sun had cleared the eastern horizon. By early morning we were sailing through traffic in Albuquerque as we made our way to the Enchanted Trails Trading Post and RV Park.
We always enjoy our brief visits with Vickie, the owner, and hope our schedule will allow us to spend the night in one of the restored vintage travel trailers that now serve as motel rooms on our next trip. I should note that signed copies of Ghost Towns of Route 66 are available at the gift shop here and that there is an excellent painting by acclaimed artist Jerry McClanahan on display.
As we had covered Grants on the first leg of the trip we decided to focus on Gallup and lunch. As my wife browsed through the Route 66 Dining & Lodging Guide published by the National Route 66 Federation, I grimly focused on making time on I-40.
Our dining choice for lunch was Angela’s housed in the cultural center that was once part of the Santa Fe Railroad complex that included a Harvey House before 1957. For good food in a very pleasant setting, at an affordable price this is a great stop. As a bonus it is centrally located, and offers an excellent opportunity for exploring the culture of the Native American tribes in the area.
The remainder of the drive was mostly focused determination on making it home before complete exhaustion set in. Of course we just had to make one more food stop to complete the trip and as is out custom, we chose the Pine Country Restaurant in Williams, one of our favorite haunts.
Last evening after installing an external hard drive we commenced with the task of organizing and editing photos. As a teaser here are a couple from various stops along the way. Care to guess where these places are?
