ANSWERS TO YOUR ROAD TRIP QUESTIONS
The schedule dictates a short post again this morning but I wanted to answer a few questions received about road trips.
What are your favorite historic lodging choices?
In order –
Wagon Wheel Motel, Cuba, Missouri – if you stay at just one historic motel or hotel next year make it the Wagon Wheel. The biggest problem we had during our visit was the difficulty in forcing ourselves to load the car and leave the next morning.
Wigwam Motel, Rialto, California – Kuamr Patel and his family have taken great strides to ensure your visit here is not void of modern amenities while preserving the time capsule feel. When business takes us to the LA area, this is choice number one for lodging.
Munger Moss Motel, Lebanon, Missouri – The Lehman’s have owned this property since 1971 and are wonderful hosts. They also take the job of steward very seriously. Rather than restoring they have carefully preserved this historic old motel making it a true capsule. Hospital clean and reasonable rates are the frosting on the cake. I would make this a tie for second place on my list.
Hassayampa Inn, Prescott, Arizona – Prescott is a very special place for my dearest friend and I. This historic old hotel is located within walking distance of a wide array of restaurants as well as the courthouse square. On site dining as to the surreal sense of having stepped back in time a half century or so.
Copper Queen, Bisbee, Arizona – the entire town of Bisbee is a time capsule but this is truly the crown jewel. With the exception of an elevator added some seventy years ago little has changed here in more than a century. A great place to stay and a wonderful base camp for exploration of the surrounding area that includes Bisbee, Tombstone, Pearce, and Dos Cabezas.
You often mention food in your postings and books. What are your top five places to eat on the raod?
Well, that list was just expanded as a result of the last trip. So, …
Ariston Cafe, Litchfield, Illinois –
Midpoint Cafe, Adrian, Texas –
Pine Country Restaurant, Williams, Arizona –
Swedish Kitchen, Escanaba, Michigan –
Rock Cafe, Stroud, Oklahoma –
If you were to plan a dream trip that included ten of your favorite destinations what would they be?
Can I count Route 66 as one destination? Okay, seriously –
Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum complex in Dearborn, Michigan –
Pioneer Museum, Minden, Nebraska –
Automobile Driving Museum, El Segundo, California –
Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia –
Supai, Arizona –
Gila Wilderness, Silver City, New Mexico –
Mr. Lincoln’s Neighborhood, Springfield, Illinois –
Muir Woods, California –
Death Valley, California –
Grand Staircase-Escalante, Utah –
Road trips are a dominant feature in your stories. Can you list five drives that should be added to every bucket list?
Only five? That should be a challenge.
Route 66 –
U.S. 6 – the entire route before it was truncated, Cape Cod to Long Beach –
A loop drive utilizing U.S. 180 from Holbrook to Deming in New Mexico and U.SW 191 from Douglas to Rock Springs in Wyoming –
U.S. 2 from St. Ignace in Michigan to Duluth. However, I strongly suggest making this a summer drive!
Now, its back to work – a photo expedition, the encyclopedia, and a few odds and ends that need immediate attention.
