THE GERMANS ARE COMING, AND THE FRENCH, AND THE ITALIANS, AND THE …

It may seem a radical idea, especially for the uninitiated. Lets abolish the U.N. and instead, have the representatives from the various countries discuss grievances during a seven day road trip on Route 66.
I have a very strong suspicion that after an evening at the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari(with Kevin and Nancy as host as well as mediator) that includes smores and Boomer, most any disagreement will be resolved. If there are still unresolved issues then the delegates would be required to stop for pie and coffee at the Midpoint Café, and enjoy the hospitality of Miss Connie at the Wagon Wheel Motel, or Bob and Ramona at the Munger Moss Motel.
I base this flight of whimsy on what has been witnessed on legendary Route 66. It never ceases to amaze me that this highway seems to be able to bridge vast chasms of culture, language, and ideology.
Case in point, last year in August, there were people from several countries in Victorville, California on purpose. The lure was the international Route 66 festival.
I mean no disrespect to the fine folks in Victorville but there is a reason the city is never the grand prize on game shows, especially in August. Yet there were people in attendance from Japan, Germany, and the Czech Republic, as well as at least a dozen states.
In a few weeks the spotlight will shine on Joplin as that city hosts the international Route 66 festival. I have already learned that a group from Germany will be attendance, and that people are flying into the area for the festival from Massachusetts, Washington, and New York.
We will be driving to the festival and we won’t be alone. Richard Talley, the owner of the beautifully restored Motel Safari in Tucumcari, is heading east in his vintage Galaxie. Mike Ward is rolling east from Phoenix.
Yep, all roads lead to Joplin in August. Will we be seeing you there?
