Destination of the Week

By on Jun 11, 2018 in ROUTE 66 | 0 comments

Our destination of the week is Grand Canyon Caverns, 60 scenic miles east of

VT 5Kingman, Arizona on historic Route 66. This delightful little roadside gem is a true time capsule, a throw back to the era of I Like Ike buttons and the debut of the Edsel.

Discovered in 1927, the caverns evolved with Route 66 and by 1962 was the second most visited attraction in Arizona aside from the Grand Canyon. At is zenith in the late 1960’s, the property consisted of an expansive resort motel with lounge, restaurant and swimming pool, two restaurants, a truck stop, gift shop, and, of course, the caverns.

Today the complex is more dynamic than at anytime in its history. The caverns tours have been expanded to include wheelchair accessible options or actual spelunking. The caverns also offers visitors:

  • A fully renovated motel that preserves the attributes of 1964 with all of the modern amenities –
  • Swimming pool –
  • Miniature golf –
  • Renovated restaurant restored to 1964 appearance –
  • Fine dining 200 feet underground at the Caverns Grotto Restaurant –
  • The bunk house for small –
  • Award winning RV park and camp ground-
  • Expansive gift shop –
  • Supai room featuring handcrafted items from the Havasupai people –
  • General store –
  • Trail rides, cattle drives, and overnight cowboy experience adventures with authentic chuck wagon –
  • Caverns Suite, the world’s darkest, deepest, and quietest motel room –
  • Group dinners including western barbecue on screened patio among the junipers –

As a Jim Hinckley’s America special bonus, special lunch/caverns tour rate for groups, special motel rates for groups, Jim Hinckley presentations with western barbecue dinner, and guided tour along the National Old Trails Road.
