Road trips without breaking the bank are possible. It just takes a bit of creative thinking, imagination, and an adventuresome spirit. Planning a road trip with a budget in mind can be a rewarding experience. As a bonus, this type of travel planning ensures that you are well prepared for most travel restrictions due to bad weather.

This type of travel is a throwback to the travels of my childhood. And as was proven on the recent trip to the Route 66 Miles of Possibility Conference that included tornadoes, torrential rain, flooded roads, and blizzards, it is also a great way to travel in comfort in any weather.

Packing Essentials for a Budget Road Trip

Being well-prepared with the right supplies can make all the difference on a road trip, especially when traveling on a budget. Start with a small to medium sized cooler, and a sturdy box or plastic crate.

Then select and pack items that will help you stay nourished, hydrated, and ready for any weather-related delays. As an example, these are items I always pack when setting out on a cross-country road trip.

• Canned Soup, Canned Fish, and Crackers: These non-perishable items are perfect for quick and easy meals on the go. They are nutritious, require no refrigeration, and as many motels provide microwave ovens, can be enjoyed anywhere.
• Tea and Hot Chocolate: Pack some tea bags and instant hot chocolate packets for a warm and comforting drink during chilly weather.
• Instant Oatmeal: A quick breakfast option that can be prepared with just hot water. If you have a refrigerator in your room, pick up some milk and bananas the night before, and make it full and hearty start to the day.
• Water: Carry plenty of bottled water to stay hydrated throughout your trip. This also comes in handy if you get stranded on the highway. And if you don’t need it, you might meet someone that does.
• Dry Cereal: An easy and lightweight option for breakfast or snacks.
• Canned Fruit: A convenient way to get your daily dose of vitamins.
• Eating Utensils: Don’t forget to pack forks, spoons, and knives for your meals.

• Disposable Plates and Bowls: These make clean-up a breeze and are perfect for picnics, if the weather permits. Surprisingly many states still maintain roadside table sites along highways, a throwback to the 1950s. The fresh air and beautiful surroundings can turn a simple meal into a memorable part of your journey.
• Nuts or Trail Mix: Great for snacking and providing energy on the go.
• Disinfectant Wipes: Essential for keeping your hands and surfaces clean.
• Coffee Mugs: Bring along some sturdy mugs for your hot beverages.

Embracing Local Flavors

One of the joys of a road trip is discovering local eateries and avoiding chain restaurants. Not only can this save money, but it also provides an opportunity to experience the unique flavors and hospitality of the places you visit. Look for popular local cafes with daily specials, which often offer great deals on delicious meals.

On a recent trip to the Route 66 Miles of Possibility Conference, we stopped at the Swinging Bridge Café in Moline, Kansas. We enjoyed a hearty dinner for two featuring fresh beef stew, fresh-baked pie, and coffee for less than $25.00. This delightful café is just one example of the hidden gems you can find when you venture beyond the off-ramp.

Accommodations: Comfort on a Budget

When it comes to booking accommodations, using reward points provided by chain motels can result in significant savings. And while non-chain “mom and pop” motels may not offer amenities such as a fitness room or continental breakfast they often offer lower rates without sacrificing comfort.

However, at any motel it is important to perform a thorough check of your motel room before settling in. Ensure the room is clean and check for bed bugs to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Wagon Wheel Motel, Cuba, Missouri

A historic landmark, the Wagon Wheel Motel boasts beautifully restored rooms, modern amenities, and a rich history dating back to 1936. It has received numerous accolades for its preservation efforts and is a favorite destination for Route enthusiasts.

Western Motel, Shamrock, Texas

Known for its welcoming atmosphere and affordable rates, comfortable rooms and attentive staff, the Western Motel is a roadside oasis for the weary traveler. The motel offers a front row seat to the show that is the turning on of the lights at the iconic U Drop Inn, a Route 66 classic. And right next door is Griff’s, an authentic Texas steakhouse.

Americana Motor Hotel, Flagstaff, Arizona

Located on Route 66 this classic 1962 motel has been refurbished and transformed into a resort complex with some very unique amenities including telescopes to enjoy the dark sky city, and bicycles for exploring Flagstaff. The motel is ideally situated in proximity to Flagstaff’s many attractions and natural wonders. An eclectic array of wonderful restaurants are within walking distance.

Finally, here are a few additional tips to ensure your road trip is safe and enjoyable:

• Check the Weather Forecast: Stay informed about the weather conditions along your route and be prepared for any changes.
• Plan Your Stops: Regular breaks are important for staying alert and reducing fatigue. Plan your stops ahead of time to include interesting sights and rest areas.
