Historical Significance of Tucumcari
But Tucumcari’s history is rich and varied. It is more than just the glow of neon. This dusty crossroads has been shaped by Native American culture, Spanish explorers, and American pioneers.
As an example, according to linguists the town’s name is derived from the Comanche word for “to lie in wait for something.” This heritage is reflected in the town’s many historical sites, including the looming Tucumcari Mountain.
Community Challenges and Resilience
Despite the setbacks faced by the community, Tucumcari remains resilient. It has survived the boom and bust of agriculture, the Great Depression, suspension of passenger rail service and the bypass of Route 66.
Recently the Route 66 corridor renaissance suffered a minor setback with Fast TV’s abandonment of the development project for the former Kmart building. The situation has been further complicated by Fast TV’s link to the investigation of fraud within the Route 66 Association of New Mexico.
According to an article published by Route 66 News, when confronted with allegations a partner in Fast TV that was serving as president of the Route 66 Association of New Mexico established a splinter group.
Establishment of the New Mexico Route 66 Association splintered the original organization. And it created divisions within the Route 66 community and in Tucumcari.
Despite these challenges, the town’s leaders and residents continue to work tirelessly towards revitalization and economic growth. This spirit of perseverance is evident in the contributions made by local business owners who are passionate about Tucumcari’s future.
