Holbrook, Arizona, bisected by legendary Route 66, is a treasure trove of Arizona historical sites and unique attractions. From the iconic Wigwam Motel to the territorial era Navajo County Courthouse, now a museum, Holbrook is a haven for curious travelers and a destination for Route 66 enthusiasts.
This week’s Jim Hinckley’s America blog post is another shared adventure, and another opportunity to share America’s story as well as inspire road trips by telling people where to go. Some come along for the ride and discover often overlooked attractions such as the Blevins House, Romo’s Restaurant, and historic Bucket of Blood Saloon. And, of course, we will also talk a bit about some old favorites including the Roxy Theater as well as the nearby attractions and national parks that make Holbrook a must-visit destination.
Navajo County Museum
Exploring Holbrook, Arizona begins with the historic Navajo County Courthouse. Located at 100 E Arizona Street, the Navajo County Historical Society Museum in the old courthouse is a must-stop for anyone interested in the rich history of the area.
The museum, housed in the 1898 courthouse houses a fascinating collection of artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Holbrook and Navajo County. Visitors can explore displays on Native American history, pioneer life, and the development of the region.
One notable historic event was the hanging of George Smiley at the Navajo County Courthouse in 1900, which marked a significant moment in the town’s judicial history. That reminds me, don’t forget to check out the fascinating territorial era jail in the cellar.
Blevins House
The Blevins House, located at 216 Joy Nevin Ave, is the site of the famous 1887 shootout between Commodore Perry Owens, a legendary lawman in the Old West, and the Blevins brothers. The shootout was a pivotal moment in Holbrook’s history and is now commemorated at the Blevins House.
The house is a private residence, but with help from a kiosk in front that details the incident, visitors can view the exterior and imagine the dramatic events that unfolded there. As an FYI for the Route 66 traveler looking to blend some western history with their trip along the Main Street of America, the last home owned by Commodore Perry Owens, another historic site, is located behind the Black Cat Lounge one block off Route 66 in Seligman, Arizona.
Romo’s Restaurant
For a taste of local flavor, visit Romo’s Restaurant, located at 121 W Hopi Dr. (Route 66). This beloved eatery offers a delightful menu of authentic Mexican and American cuisine with a regional twist.
Romo’s Restaurant is known for its friendly service and welcoming atmosphere, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
Wigwam Motel
For Route 66 travelers no visit to Holbrook would be complete without a stay at the iconic Wigwam Motel, located at 811 W Hopi Dr. This unique motel with individual rooms in buildings designed to look like teepees is a beloved landmark on Route 66. They were the inspiration for the Cozy Con Motel in the animated movie Cars.
Bucket of Blood Saloon
The long-shuttered Bucket of Blood Saloon, located at 109 Bucket of Blood Street, faces an uncertain future. But for now, this historic saloon with a dark past makes for a great photo op.
According to local legend, the saloon, which dates to the late 1800s, earned its name from a notorious bar fight that left the floor stained with blood. Located near the historic depot, there are several other territorial era gems nearby.
Historic Railroad Depot
The historic railroad depot is another must-see attraction in Holbrook. The frontier era depot built of locally quarried stone in 1892 played a central role in the development of Holbrook as well as the surrounding area.
Arizona Rancho (Higgins House, Brunswick Hotel, Arizona Hotel)
Exploring Holbrook, Arizona beyond the Route 66 corridor is an adventure filled with surprising discoveries. One of my favorites is the forlorn Arizona Rancho, also known as the Higgins House, Brunswick Hotel, and Arizona Hotel located at 175 S Tovar Avenue.
This historic building is thought to be the oldest extant structure in Holbrook. Built by Pedro Montaño, the house was expanded about 1885 with a two-story wing of adobe bricks. This is known as the Higgins addition which took place after the sale of the property to James and Maggie Higgins. Used as a boarding house, the Higgins House became the Brunswick Hotel after 1889 with completion of new additions.
The upstairs portion of the addition was used as a dance hall and as a Masonic lodge. Then it again served as a hotel providing lodging for travelers on the National Old Trails Road. In the late 1930s a motel wing was added, and during WWII it housed students training at the local airfield.
Roxy Theater
The Roxy Theater, located at 153 W Hopi Dr, that has been entertaining locals and visitors since the 1950s. The theater offers a charming, vintage movie-going experience with its classic marquee and retro interior. Catching a film at the Roxy Theater is a delightful way to spend an evening in Holbrook.
Nearby Attractions
While Holbrook is a treasure trove of historic sites, the surrounding area also offers numerous attractions and natural wonders worth exploring. And that means Holbrook is ideally suited as a base camp for a wide array of adventures.
Located just 28 miles east of Holbrook, Petrified Forest National Park is a breathtaking destination that highlights the beauty of the Arizona desert. The park is home to a stunning collection of petrified wood, ancient fossils, and the vibrant Painted Desert badlands.
Visitors can hike through the park, take in the scenic views, and learn about the area’s geological history. As an FYI this is the only national park bisected by Route 66.
Chevelon Canyon Bridge
The Chevelon Canyon Bridge, built in 1913 on the National Old Trails Road, is a historic landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into the past. The highway bridge, which spans the picturesque Chevelon Canyon, was the first to be authorized by the newly minted state of Arizona.
Located on a graded gravel road that was once the National Old Trails Road can be a bit difficult to find. Ask for directions at the visitor center and make it a loop drive from Holbrook to Winslow with a return through Joseph City with a stop at the Jack Rabbit Trading Post.
