Welcome to Albuquerque, New Mexico – a vibrant city where history, culture, and the infectious magic of the great American road trip converge. Whether you’re a Route 66 enthusiast, a history buff, or just someone looking to explore an eclectic city with a dynamic vibe, Albuquerque is a place that offers something for everyone.
From its bustling Old Town to iconic Route 66 attractions and sites linked to Breaking Bad, this city is rich with stories waiting to be discovered.
A Taste of History in Albuquerque’s Museums and Attractions
Albuquerque’s museums are a treasure trove of its diverse history and culture. As an example, consider the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Owned and operated by the nineteen Indian Pueblos of New Mexico this immersive museum preserves and perpetuates Pueblo Indian culture, history, and art.
The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science takes you on a journey from the age of the dinosaurs to space exploration. It is an example of how the past, the present, and the future are seamless in this ancient city nestled along the Rio Grande.
For a deeper dive into Albuquerque’s history, the Albuquerque Museum in Old Town just off Route 66 showcases everything from art to local history. This museum has become a leading institution for art, history and culture in New Mexico and the American Southwest.
And if you are traveling with children, I highly recommend the Explora Science Center and Children’s Museum near Old Town. The museum employs a hands-on approach to science, math and art. Children with an inquisitive mind from age 8 to 80 will find something to spark curiosity and inspire discovery.
Route 66: The Mother Road Runs Through Albuquerque
Of course, no visit to Albuquerque would be complete without a drive (and walk) down legendary Route 66. This storied highway ran north and south along 4th Street 1926 until 1937. Then it was realigned to run east to west along Central Avenue. The two alignments intersect in the heart of the city.
As one of the most famous highways in the world, Route 66 has left its mark on Albuquerque with iconic motels, restaurants, and roadside attractions that have stood the test of time. The Route 66 renaissance has given some old classics a new lease on life. It has also encouraged entrepreneurs to build future classics for a new generation of Route 66 enthusiasts.
On my list of “must visit “places is Enchanted Trails Trading Post and RV Park, located along Route 66 at the summit of Nine Mile Hill just west of the city. Owned and managed by Vickie Ashcraft of the Route 66 Association of New Mexico, the historic 1940s trading Post is a repurposed time capsule.
In addition to fascinating displays and photography, and a gift shop, it serves as the heart of the modern, full-service RV Park. Vickie is a walking encyclopedia of Route 66 lore in the Land of Enchantment. So be sure to make time for a chat. After all, it’s the people that infuse Route 66 with an infectious magic.
If you are traveling with an RV, Enchanted Trails also offers an excellent base for exploring Albuquerque and the surrounding area. The park has a nostalgic feeling that transports you back to the heyday of Route 66, making it the perfect place to spend the night while soaking in the history of the Mother Road. This is enhanced by the display of vintage travel trailers that are time capsules on wheels.
Welcome to Albuquerque
For those looking for a true Route 66 experience, Albuquerque has several classic motels that retain their vintage charm. The historic El Vado is a delightful blend of authentic and modern with refurbished rooms, microbrewery, and restored neon signage. It’s a cozy spot where you can enjoy the nostalgia of the road while having a comfortable place to rest. As a bonus it is mere blocks from some of the city’s most exciting attractions.
For a more upscale experience, the Hotel Andaluz is a beautifully restored historic hotel in downtown Albuquerque. One of the first Hilton Hotels this gem combines the charm of the past with modern luxury. It’s the perfect place for travelers who want to experience a taste of New Mexico’s rich architectural history while enjoying high-end amenities.
Savoring New Mexico Flavors
When it comes to dining, Albuquerque offers a variety of flavors that reflect the city’s diverse heritage. From traditional New Mexican and Native American cuisine to international fare, Albuquerque has something to satisfy every appetite.
One of our favorites is located on Central Avenue (Route66) on the west side of town. This is a tangible link to the glory days of Route 66.
So, for a hearty meal with a touch of nostalgia, Western View Steak Diner and House is a must-visit. A Route 66 institution, this diner serves up classic American comfort food with an emphasis on tender steaks and fresh ingredients. The warm, welcoming atmosphere and old-school charm make it a perfect stop for a satisfying meal after a day of sightseeing. And it is perfect for breakfast as a new day of adventure begins.
Old Town Albuquerque: A Window to the Past
Step into the heart of Albuquerque’s history by visiting Old Town, a charming neighborhood along Route 66 filled with adobe buildings, art galleries, shops, and restaurants. This historic district dates to 1706. It serves as the cultural and social center of the city, and portal to its founding years.
Wander through its narrow streets and alleyways, and you’ll find everything from Native American jewelry to handcrafted pottery and vibrant Southwestern art. One of the highlights of Old Town is the San Felipe de Neri Church, a stunning 18th-century church that serves as a testament to Albuquerque’s Spanish colonial roots. The church and its garden are a peaceful spot to pause and reflect on the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Don’t Miss: The Sandia Peak Tramway
Add some zest to a Route 66 odyssey with the Sandi Peak Tramway. For a breathtaking view of Albuquerque and the surrounding landscapes, a tramway ride is a must.
This world-famous tramway takes visitors from the base of the Sandia Mountains to the top of Sandia Peak offering panoramic views of the city, the Rio Grande Valley, and the distant deserts and mountains. At the summit, you’ll find a spectacular observation deck, perfect for taking in the beauty of New Mexico’s high desert. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also hiking trails to explore once you reach the top, as well as a restaurant that serves delicious meals with a side of incredible views.
Whether you’re looking to catch a sunset over the city or enjoy a sunrise in the mountains, the Sandia Peak Tramway is a must-see experience that adds another layer of awe to your Albuquerque adventure.
