On the September 29, 2024 episode our guests were Carla Holmes and Sherry Kast from Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The free ranging conversation centered on their innovative educational program that focused on the upcoming Route 66 Centennial. This fascinating program provides students with real world experience through hands on preservation, business, and marketing initiatives.
Their passion and dedication to the campaign were palpable. That made for an engaging and inspiring conversation. Judging by comments made during the program, and notes sent afterwards, this episode provided a lot of inspiration.
Another fascinating guest that grabbed the audiences attention was a conversation with Jeffrey B. Schmidt. He is the author of Oklahoma’s Ghost Towns, Vanishing Towns, and Towns Persisting against the Odds. Schmidt’s discussion brought to life the forgotten and fading towns of Oklahoma. He wove tales of resilience and nostalgia that captivated listeners.

Cheryl offered insights into the conference’s history and its impact on the Route 66 community. She also discussed the conferences role in the upcoming Route 66 centennial. And we still found time for a discussion about her extensive research and writing.
- Rhys Martin: As the president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, Rhys shared his extensive knowledge and experiences. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Route 66 in Oklahoma. He also provided insight into innovative programs and projects that are fostering economic development along the highway corridor in that state. We then discussed how this is helping build a sense of community with creation of cooperative partnerships. When it comes to Route 66 the folks in Oklahoma are selling everyhthing on the hog including the squeal.
- Joyce Harbin Cole: An artist, muralist, and illustrator based in Pontiac, Illinois. Joyce discussed her creative process and the significance of her artwork in capturing the spirit and history of Route 66. She also discussed her contributions to the Mother Road Route 66 Passport developed by Bratislava, Slovakia based Touch Media that is also the creator of the Route 66 Navigation app.
- Connie Loveland: The director of Tucumcari Main Street, Connie emphasized the importance of community involvement in revitalizing and maintaining the historic charm of Tucumcari.
- Vickie Ashcraft: As Ashcraft is the president of the Route 66 Association of New Mexico, she talked about the association’s work to preserve the heritage of Route 66. She is also passionate about promoting tourism in New Mexico. The upcoming Route 66 centennial as well as its potential for economic development in rural communities was also a part of our conversation.
- Lisa Kissinger: Representing the Americana Motor Hotel in Flagstaff, Lisa provided insights into the challenges and rewards of running a historic Route 66 motel. She also discussed the transformation of a large 89 room complex built along Route 66 in 1962 into a resort destination.
- Joey Madia: From LiveIt Experiences, Joey shared his plans for organizing and creating immersive and educational tours along Route 66. The focus is on helping guests connect deeply with the history and culture of the road. He also discussed the development of escape rooms internationally. And then we veered into the weeds and talked about the mysterious 1953 UFO crash in Kingman, Arizona
- Professor Nolan Stolz: A scholar with a passion for Route 66, Professor Stolz discussed his academic perspective on the significance of the highway in American history. And that to conversation about his creation of a Route 66 suite for the highways centennial.
- Antonio and Paulina Rico: Owners of the Arizona 9 Motor Hotel in Williams, Arizona recounted their journey of restoring and operating a historic Route 66 motel. They shared the challenges and joys, and the future, of their ongoing project.
- David Brenner: The owner of Roadrunner Lodge Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico, David provided a behind-the-scenes look at running a successful Route 66 motel. He also shared his vision for the future of the property. We discussed his involvement with Tucumcari tourism, and the transformation of the 1950s Leatherwood Manor into the award winning Roadrunner Lodge Motel.
