Jim Hinckley is also a prolific author. To date he has published more than 20 books. He has also written hundreds of feture articles. His writings delve into story of America. These stories about America’s highways, road trips, and adventures are told to armchair travelrs as well as adventurers. His books, such as “Ghost Towns of Route 66” and “The Route 66 Encyclopedia,” have become essential reading for road trip enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

In Murder and Mayhem on The Main Street of America: Tales from Bloody 66, Hinckley moved beyond neon and tail fins. This award-winning book presented the dark side of Route 66 when it was the Main Street of America.

Scheduled for release in fall 2025 is Hinckley’s 24th book. This Route 66 anthology was cowritten by Rhys Martin, president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, author Cheryl Eichar Jett, and Dries Bessels of the Dutch Route 66 Association. Author and historian Joe Sonderaman, and Greg Hasman, a journalist and photographer, also contributed to the project.

Hinckley also highlighted its connection to Route 66, and location at the heart of an array of attractions.

A similar service was provided in Tucumcari, New Mexico. He also helped develop the latest iteration of Tucumcari’s visitor guide.

Kingman Tours Project

One of his latest contributions was work on the Kingman Tours project developed by Kingman Main Street, Talisman Magic Marketing and the City of Kingman. The self guided walking tour that uses QR code technology is narrated by Jim Hinckley.

It has been recognized as an example of how experiential tourism projects can serve as a catalyst for historic district revitalization. As the tour centers on the historic business district of Kingman, there is a strong Route 66 component. This includes a mural by acclaimed folk artist Bob Waldmire, and world-famous Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner.

The tour promoted as a “Walkabout with Jim Hinckley,” was recently awarded certification as an official Route 66 centennial project. It’s a perfect example of how Jim’s passion for history and adventure is used to provide an immersive experience.
